Simon Yong (born 21 September 1978 in Singapore) is a guitarist known for his work with Progressive Rock band Zero Sequence and Shirlyn & the UnXpected.
He first started learning music at aged 5 playing the organ, but later mutated into a talented self-taught guitar player and singer as he turned 17.
“There were a lot of music in the house. My Dad plays the trumpet, harmonica, guitar, and the organ. All my uncles are great singers who also play a few instruments. So it’s difficult to avoid the music activities that took place in the family when growing up.”
In 1998, Simon Yong founded Progressive Rock band Zero Sequence. Besides winning two band competitions in 2000 and 2005 respectively, Simon has also recorded a 7-track EP “Personality Number 9” (1999), a single“Eternal Damnation of Liars” (2001), and a full-length concept album “Flight of Transcendence” (2008) which has received rave reviews on newspapers and numerous magazines. The 2nd track on the album “The Grim Phantasm” has been nominated for “Best Rock Song”, “Best Guitar Riff”, and “Best Genre Bending-Mindboggling-Out-Of-This-World-Track” in Malaysia’s Voize.my’s inaugural Independent Music Awards.
Apart from writing and rocking out with Zero Sequence at music festivals such as SINGfest 2008 Fort Canning, Baybeats 2009 Esplanade, Ignite! Music Festival 2010, and MIDEM 2012 Cannes, France, the famed guitar dribbler who is also a proud endorsee of ESP guitars has also work with some of Singapore’s most amazing singers such as Singapore Idol finalists Maia Lee, the soulful and talented Vanessa Fernandez, Lily Anna Nuris, Mathilda D’Silva, singer-songwriter sensation Shirlyn Tan, Inch Chua, and Surath Godfrey.
In 2007, Simon joined Shirlyn and the UnXpected and began playing some of the most challenging cover songs any other band wouldn’t have thought of. The band sphere-heads Wala Wala Café Bar for years and has attracted some of the wildest crowd ever in Singapore till today.
Other than performing, Simon has also conducted guitar clinics at NUS (2006), the Singapore Arts Museum (2007), and “Rise of the Stringers” @ Scape Park (2008), as part of a member from Fretboard Frenzy. He was also one of the judges at the Singapore Polytechnic Crescendo 2007 singing competition final. An influential figure in the music industry, Simon has appeared on numerous radio shows – Power98FM, Live93.5FM, and 98.7FM for interviews and live acoustic performances. At the moment he is working on his first solo studio album.
