Singapore — Audio-Technica (S.E.A.) has signed local jazz singer Yvette Atienza as its new ambassador for its artiste program, The Elites of Audio-Technica. This program was initiated in 2012 to lend support to the local music scene by providing selected artistes with Audio-Technica’s premium Artist Elite® microphones and audio equipment that help them deliver rock-solid performances.
Way before other local Singapore jazz vocalists sang their way to the top of the heap in the 1990s, Yvette Atienza had already established herself as a singular talent with astonishing versatility in the Singapore music scene. Singing professionally for almost 30 years now, Yvette was the pioneer of jazz and latin jazz vocals in Singapore in the early 90s when the Singapore Jazz Music Scene was in its infancy and there was a dearth of local jazz singers. Over the three decades of performing, she has experienced performing and recording with numerous well-known international artistes and local Singapore bands singing everything from pop, rock, and even country. However, Yvette has found her true passion in the two complicated musical styles of jazz and latin jazz – two genres of music that she identifies as the music that truly defines and embodies her.
“Growing up in a house where piano students came and went, where choral groups would fill our house to the brim while my mother taught and conducted them, where my dad would sing while my mom played the piano every night, and most importantly, where I learned to play the piano from the age of three, there was never a lack of music or passion for music in my home! Music is just too much ingrained in me. I couldn’t run away from it.”
Yvette has definitely come a long way from her humble beginnings. Now a well sought-after jazz and latin jazz singer in Singapore, Yvette has performed in almost every jazz venue and every jazz festival in Singapore. Prior to settling down in Singapore, she also toured Southeast Asia - Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Hongkong - performing with local band Eurasia and as leader of her own jazz quintet, “Yvette and the Variasians”.
Yvette’s soulful and passionate three-octave voice has never failed to please even the most discerning music lover. Her extraordinary vocal instrument moves easily from a soul-searing jazz ballad to up-tempo scatting to the contagious rhythms of a salsa classic. She is also arguably the only local singer that can make that seamless connection between the great traditions of blues, jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian rhythms and funk!.
Ask her why she wants to be an ambassador for Audio-Technica and she’ll tell you how much she adores the company’s products. Yvette loves her Audio-Technica Artist Elite AE5400 Premium Vocal Condenser microphone and she brings its everywhere she goes for her performances and gigs. “No other microphone can capture my full vocal potential like the AE5400. I have been looking for a microphone that can best suit my voice for a very long time and when I tried this microphone, I knew it was the one”
Nowadays, Yvette runs her own music programme where she mentors hundreds of aspiring singers on the right techniques, requirements and intricacies of the fine art of singing. And when she is not teaching, you can often find her jazzing up the crowd in popular venues such as SingJazz and BluJaz.
